Idea boards should contain ideas, tasks, notes and most importantly, pictures as they speak for themselves. Chose pictures of fixtures or décor items that you like, nature photos containing colors that move you, home decor ideas taken from a magazine, etc. Anything that inspires you is good for your idea board.
Here are some guidelines to help you build your own idea board:
- Try to choose a maximum of 3 colors: a main color that represents 60% of your décor, a second color for 30% and an accent color for 10%.
- Always keep the purpose of the room in mind so you don’t get lost during your research.
- Try to follow 3 inspirational words such as: “cozy, warm & family” or “fun, fresh & colorful” or even “nature, raw & rustic”. Go for what you would like guests and yourself to feel when they are in the room.
- You should keep your idea board simple and it should fit on one page. If you have too many pieces, you’re likely to get lost.
- Draw a sketch of your finished room or ask a designer to draw one for you. It will motivate you to have a clear idea of what the finished room will look like and will help you focus during the project.
