Since my debuts in interior design, I noticed that most people don't know the difference between a decorator and a designer. Would you be able to tell the difference?
Here is a little information that differentiate both and I hope it will help you make the best choice for your future projects.
1- While there are college and university degrees for designers, a decorator does not need any degree to work. (in Quebec, Canada)
2- A decorator will be limited to color choices, fabrics and other materials, but a designer will also work on the functional aspect of the space.
3- Designers has architectural knowledge that enable them to draw demolition plans as well as construction plans for a complete home renovation.
4- Designers have the right to draw home plans without having to work with an architect. (some limits on house type and size apply)
In short, a designer can bring a lot more to your renovation or construction projects. If your main concern is in the choice of colors, than you have a wide variety of possibilities in the type of professional to work with. However, for largers projects, I recommend going with a designer. They will have a lot of wise advice and new ideas that you may have not thought of.
